Destiny 2 Lore: Red Legion

update 10/08/2017

In this article, you will find bits and pieces of Destiny lore put together into a narrative. Theories will occasionally be mentioned but they are only theories until officially confirmed within the Destiny lore.

The Ghaul/Gary-Red Legion History

In Destiny The Taken King, Guardians Infiltrated the Dreadnaught A massive Hive warship under the command of Oryx and his legion of Hive. The Guardians were tasked with investigating an outbound signal being broadcasted from the dreadnaught by cabal sky burners. The signal being broadcast from the dreadnaught was a distress signal which was sent to the head of the cabal empire. The Vanguard made decrypting the contents of this signal a top priority, however as we can see from the attack on the tower in destiny 2, it appears the Vanguard couldn't decipher the signal in time. Destiny 2's main antagonist, Primus Ghaul/Gary is the commander of the red legion. The red legion was organized to invade earth by the order of the cabal Emperor after the sky burners distress signal was received. Primus Ghaul/Gary personally lead the red legion in a successfully surprise attack against the last safe city crippling the traveler in the process. During the red legions surprise attack, a majority of the last city was destroyed. Following the arrival of Oryx within our solar system, Primus Tal'un of the sky burners legion sent a report to cabal high command. The report contained details on the destruction of fleet base Korris. This report was seen by the emperor of the cabal himself. The emperor responded to the report by ordering Tal'un to board the dreadnaught and destroy the taken king. The cabal raid on the dreadnaught failed and Primus Tal'un sends the distress signal. Ghaul is the rank of Primus which is the cabal equivalent of a general or admiral. Ghaul's motivation to destroy the last safe city and the traveler is currently unknown however a popular theory is that Ghaul has a personal reason for attacking the last city and the traveler. He believes that the traveler's gifts to humanity were supposed to be his. That he was supposed to be chosen by the traveler. And that we are undeserving of the travelers gifts as we are weak and undisciplined.
